Brownsmead, Knappa, Svensen (BKS) Sportsmen’s Club

Founded in 1935, the BKS Sportsmen's Club originally began as the Brownsmead Athletic Association, created by a close-knit group of ranchers, loggers, fishermen, and their families. These community members regularly convened at the Brownsmead Grange Hall for one of the three annual turkey shoots that featured live turkeys. By around 1950, the association expanded through a merger with individuals from Svensen and Knappa, transforming into the BKS Sportsmen's Club. Initially established on county-owned land leased for a mere $1, the club developed a 2-acre trap shooting range and erected a modest one-room clubhouse.

A pivotal moment came when the county decided to exchange some land, which led to a change in landlords for the club. Despite the lease continuing, rental rates increased. Through diligent fundraising efforts, the club was able to purchase the land, by then amounting to 10 acres, from Boise Cascade — marking it the third or fourth timber company to manage the lease. The club's facilities expanded in 1968 with the addition of a second trap shooting range, a 100-yard rifle range, and a small pistol bay. The mid-1980s saw further development with the expansion of the small clubhouse to include added storage and the installation of flush toilets.

Approximately in 2012, the club further extended its property by acquiring an adjacent 14.5 acres from Hampton Affiliates, bringing the total area to 24.5 acres. The BKS Sportsmen's Club holds memberships with several prestigious organizations, including the National Rifle Association (NRA), Oregon Association of Shooting Ranges (OASR), Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), and the Pacific International Trapshooting Association (PITA), underscoring its commitment to responsible sportsmanship and community engagement.

Located at 92411 Abbott Road, Astoria, OR 97103, the BKS Sportsmen's Club invites individuals to explore their facilities and learn more about how they can engage with the club's activities and community efforts.

Key figures in its formation included Floyd “Pat” Murphy, W. Joseph O’Connor, and Franklin Lew. The club's lineage traces back to the Oregon Game Protective Society, established in 1946 to protect elk herds, with Murphy playing a crucial role. The club saw significant growth under his leadership, reaching over 1400 members by 1961. O’Connor contributed as the treasurer, first for the Oregon Rifle and Pistol Club and later for PRSC. The Baker County Rod & Gun Club, active between the World Wars, focused on wildlife conservation and introduced various species to the region. Newberg Rifle & Pistol Club

During World War II, the Newberg unit of the Oregon State Guard was established for emergency defense of the home front, as regular troops were deployed overseas. After the war, a group of men from this unit, enjoying marksmanship, founded the Newberg Rifle & Pistol Club in 1948, affiliating with the National Rifle Association and the Civilian Marksmanship Department to obtain rifles on loan for training juniors. This club, being a key part of the founder's legacy, who was a charter member, has promoted shooting sports for 48 years, especially focusing on training juniors. The family, deeply involved in 4-H, integrated marksmanship into their activities, and provided volunteer instructors for mandatory Hunter Ed. Their facilities moved from the Fernwood Grange, to a school basement, a warehouse, and even a custom-built home garage to accommodate a 50ft range. In the 1970s, the club found a new home in the Gibbs School gymnasium, with the Gibbs Community Club's support revitalizing both the senior and junior divisions. The founder's shooting jacket symbolizes their ongoing commitment to the club's goals and community contribution.

Witnessing fluctuations in membership and activities, it initially collaborated closely with the Newberg Volunteer Fire Department, hosting annual Turkey shoots to support the department. Clarence Heater, a founding member, eventually became Newberg Fire Department's first paid fire chief. The seventies saw the club at its zenith with 200 members, holding numerous events and giving away significant prizes, including a Bass boat. However, the nineties brought a decline in membership, challenging the club's sustainability. Recently, it has experienced a resurgence, now boasting about 180 active members. Operating as a non-profit, entirely volunteer-run organization, it supports local high school trapshooting teams and organizes various shooting events for youth and adults. The club offers public shotgun shooting and has expanded its facilities, including adding a third trap range. Recent years have seen record participation, with over 215,000 clay targets thrown in 2021.
